Abstract

The operations research center at the university of california (berkeley) has been conducting a program one element of which is the investigation of the economic and technical feasibility of improved systems for responding to freeway accidents, together with the optimal design and operation of such systems. An extensive literature review was made, resulting in the present publication. The bibliography contains 196 annotated references. Author and keyword indexes are appended. A matrix is also appended that plots detection systems against servicing means and lists the references appropriate to the conjunctions. Finally, 16 research projects in progess, culled from the 1970 edition of "highway research in progress", are listed.
