Abstract

This is a final note on a multi year research programme among young cyclists and moped riders. This project was started in the year 1984, and was commissioned by the Road Safety Department of the Dutch Ministry of Transport and Public Works. The project was first titled "Conditions for research", and later on "Task analysis of cyclists and moped riders". The aims of the project were: (1) to determine the conditions for a safe traffic behaviour; and (2) to derive education goals from these conditions. It was not possible, however, that one task analysis could form the basis for education goals directed at both cyclists and moped riders. The note summarizes the most important results from all the publications presented within the context of the project. One of the research results that is discussed is the young cyclists' chance on accidents. The note also presents the education goals for: (i) 6 to 12 year old cyclists; (ii) 12 to 16 year old cyclists; and (iii) novice moped riders.
