Abstract

The conflict method advisory group was set up at the end of 1984 to bring together the relevant activities of both the netherlands government and research institutions and to study the use made of the method so as to ensure that it is used correctly. The advisory group's duties are (1) to indicate the possible applications of the conflict method in road safety research, (2) to carry out quality control of the use of the technique employed, (3) to supervise and guide further developments relating to the method, and (4) to encourage the use of the technique. To support the work of the advisory group, the dutch institute for road safety research SWOV has included the following activities in its plan of work; (1) developing methods for systematic observation of traffic behaviour based on a more theoretical approach to road safety, (2) providing methodological supervision, in joint consultation, of the application of the method in various studies, (3) producing a manual for the use of the method, and (4) devising training programmes to enable more organisations to make use of the method.
