Abstract

TravelSmart encourages the use of environmentally-friendly transport such as public transport, cycling, walking and car pooling. It supports voluntary change in the behaviour of individuals by raising awareness through campaigns, and improving access to information and opportunities to use environmentally-friendly transport. While TravelSmart does not spend money directly on building infrastructure, the aim of the program is to encourage people to use existing facilities, and to make the best of those facilities. A recent experience of implementing the TravelSmart program in two different areas in South-East Queensland, the Sippy Downs and Noosa precincts, has highlighted the importance of effective partnerships with those who manage this infrastructure. Promoting awareness of existing infrastructure and services, results in an increase in the use of sustainable modes of transport - walking, cycling, and catching public transport. By working in collaboration we can help encourage people to use the infrastructure and planning you develop. This paper will highlight some essential ingredients required for delivering sustainable transport: building strong partnerships between those who promote the services and those who plan, develop and build the vital infrastructure.
