Abstract

This chapter examines the relationship between time and travel. Aspects of the perception of time are considered including the concept of a time budget. A table is presented of trends in the time budgets of men in different countries between 1960 and 1986. Hypotheses relating time to behaviour are examined including a) the peaking phenomenon, b) daily, weekly and seasonal routines and c) flexibility and constraints. The temporal distribution of trips for various countries are compared for the categories of workers, schools and shopping. Strategies are then discussed which use travel time to alleviate congestion problems.
