Abstract

The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) has undertaken a range of initiatives that have successfully reduced the road toll in NSW. This has led to a reduction of 35 percent in the number of deaths and serious injuries for people aged 17-25. The RTA has also recognised that to continue to build on this trend, and to reduce the over representation of young people in road fatalities and serious injuries, additional action is required. This has led to work that has focused on consulting with stakeholders, specifically young people and agencies in road safety, injury prevention, youth health and youth policy. Work arising from this includes the establishment of the NSW Youth Road Safety Steering Group and focus groups with young men in urban and rural NSW, conducted in collaboration with NSW Health and the Motor Accidents Authority (MAA). The work outlined in this paper represents part of the work currently being conducted by the RTA and NSW Health to address youth road safety and injury prevention.
