Abstract

Passengers in public transport pay only a small part of the operating costs of the public transport. In the Netherlands the tariffs for public transport are only 15% in urban areas and 50% for the railway system. The rest is financed by the government. In the Dutch situation the price of the ticket for the bus, tram or train is a political decision- process. The government has to subsidize the public transport to improve the mobility and to decrease the use of the car.
