Abstract

The 'white cane' -still the most important mobility aid for the visually handicapped- is evaluated with its functional aspects, ergonomics and mechanics. The materials tested consisted of eight canes, most of them of the telescoping or folding type. In spite of all the experimentation, .the ideal cane which meets all the requirements has yet to be found. Sometimes the canes have some reflectorized material to make it more visible in darkness, but this is not sufficient.
