Abstract

The improvement of transportation facilities is one of the most difficult developmental challenges faced by the landlocked developing countries. The large capital investment required, the high operating costs, and the lack of natural resources to generate needed revenues, pose major problems. The overall situation of the countries is exacerbated by low volumes of traffic, long distances, and often the need for many transshipment operations.
