Abstract

This chapter discusses technical innovation in transport vehicles and infrastructure, and in the operation and management of transport systems. The first group of innovations includes those in: (1) individual road passenger vehicles, especially cars; (2) buses; (3) commercial vehicles; (4) rail infrastructure and rolling stock; and (5) road and airport infrastructure construction. In the second group, the main technical innovations are in radio data based systems, whose main application areas are: (1) demand management; (2) travel information; (3) traffic information; (4) traffic control; (5) vehicle control; (6) parking management; and (7) organisation and general management of urban and interurban traffic. management of urban and interurban traffic. Other technical innovations are in: (1) freight logistics and management; (2) public transport; and (3) combined transport. The chapter also discusses the operational impacts, costs, benefits, and dissemination patterns of technical innovation.
