Abstract

Many of today's sniggering decisions involve intangibles which cannot be solved by mathematical analysis. A useful tool is a technique which requires the construction of a scale model and the use of a Modelscope which takes motion pictures inside of the model. The Modelscope is a miniature inverted periscope approximately ¼ inch in diameter to which a camera can be attached to the upper end. The lower and has a lens with a horizontal field of view. A photograph taken with the Modelscope appears to be a life size picture of the project. Commercial motion picture producers can make single frame exposures, with scaled movements of moving objects such as an automobile, and produce a motion picture which simulates the reality of the proposed project at full scale. One motion picture produced by these methods has been found to be a substantial aid to decision making in a major urban freeway project.
