Abstract

Technical solutions for traffic noise : a new sound ? Traffic noise has adverse effects on human health and well-being. For a long time, therefore, all kinds of measures have been taken to reduce noise or its effects. Measures may be technical or focused on reducing traffic volume; they may also be concerned with spatial planning aspects. Issues documented here cover technical measures for road and railroad traffic, in particular, the possibilities offered by silent cars, trains, pavements and railroad tracks, the so-called source measures. There are many more possibilities for reducing noise at the source, even though the solution for noise problems will often be found in a combination of measures. This will involve both national and international authorities. Although it will mean considerable costs, the benefits can eventually supersede the costs. (Author/publisher)
