SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research has commissioned the TNO Road-Vehicles Research Institute to carry out a technical preliminary study into the wrong use of seat belts and child seats. The aim of this study was, among other things, to develop an observation method for a national study into the wrong use of safety systems by vehicle occupants. It appears from the preliminary study that the questionnaires applied can be improved. The results about the incorrect use are alarming, especially for child seats. However, the results cannot be considered as representative for the current situation in the surroundings of the Dutch municipality of Leidschendam, where the preliminary study was carried out. In addition, the numbers of different forms of incorrect use cannot be interpreted at a national level.
