Abstract

This study is concerned with carbon-dioxide reduction potentials of heavy-duty vehicles. In a literature research semi-trailer trucks, delivery trucks, city busses, and coaches were addressed. The study aims at identifying technical measures for the reduction of carbon-dioxide emissions for these selected vehicles. The reduction potentials of these measures were broken down by the vehicles' mode of application. Thereby untapped potentials were revealed, e. g. by means of driving resistance optimizations on semi-trailer trucks, by means of recuperation of braking energy on city busses and delivery trucks, and by means of demand-actuated auxiliary units in city busses and coaches. Low-carbon measures for semi-trailer trucks were extensively considered. For this purpose driving resistance measurements were conducted on a Euro V semi-trailer truck in order to quantify the drag reduction resulting from aerodynamic add-on parts for semi-trailers. Their fuel saving potentials were subsequently quantified by deploying a validated fuel-consumption model simulating an established fuel-consumption test (VerkehrsRundschau-Test). Moreover, a cost-benefit-calculation reveals the effectiveness of the analyzed measures. Subsequently, the prototype was tested in the real world fuel-consumption test, both in the baseline configuration as well as with a bundle of aerodynamic add-on parts consisting of side panels and boat-tail flaps. Here, a possible carbon-dioxide reduction of 4.8% was demonstrated. The measured savings exceeded the predicted savings by means of the fuel consumption modelling. (Author/publisher)
