Abstract

This paper was presented at the "Transportation geographic information system (GIS) applications" session. These proceedings are available on CD-ROM. International Road Dynamics is designing and providing a vehicle tracking system to audit Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's current Partnership program. The truck tracking system is based on fully tested and proven GPS and GIS technology which has been in use for several years. The proposed truck tracking system uses GPS satellite technology to automatically locate and track vehicles. The geographical coordinates of the vehicle are combined with time of travel, total loading, and tire pressure, to determine other information such as route taken (road used), speed, and noncompliance. Using GIS, each trip can then be traced back to specific roads used troughout the day. Based on the accurate and reliable routing information, the revenue from the truck companies can be allocated to each jurisdiction according to actual road usage. The system will automatically summarize the raw data for billing purposes, with the flexibility to provide various reports. Trucking companies can be charged according to the mileage traveled, season of travel, and highways used. The benefits of the automated system will be realized through an increase in administrative efficiency, the formation of valuable and accurate database of trucking information, and continued savings in time and money for trucking operations in Saskatchewan.
