Abstract

Improvement of safety at rail-highway crossings is often constrained by legal parameters that divide the responsibility for action between the public agency and the private company. Some technological aspects of the public responsibility related to train detection techniques different from the time-worn track circuit systems are presented. Some of the new approaches appear feasible and attractive.
