Abstract

The snow removal equipment used by Ministere des Transports du Quebec (MTQ) has developed considerably in recent years with the addition and testing of new technologies for carrier vehicles and removal equipment. The goalof this presentation is two-fold: to give an overview of the typical features and changes made to the snow removal trucks that operate in winter inQuebec and to present certain equipment used in winter road maintenance activities. All snow removal carrier truck components (i.e., engine, transmission, drive train, tires, chassis, accessories, and gross vehicle weightrating) are described. The typical features of snow and ice removal equipment (i.e., snowplows, snowpushers, spreaders, dump body, spreader regulation systems, and prewetting systems) are considered. In addition, the presentation will cover the experimental testing of onboard electronic systemssuch as GPS and temperature sensing. Systems that make it possible to quickly change the truck's configuration are also addressed. The configuration of other types of equipment used in snow removal operations, such as two-axle trucks, four-axle trucks, snowblowers, graders, and loaders is discussed. An overview of the developments expected for winter maintenance equipment in the coming years is provided. For the covering abstract see ITRD E143097.
