Abstract

This study describes a joint investigation carried out by various institutions and experts engaged in industry and research. It is divided into two sections: collection of data, analysis etc., possibilities of new technology in relation to traffic safety. Part a describes the information to be drawn from the collection and evaluation of traffic accident data as a basis for new technologies; then there is a discussion of the human individual as a factor in vehicle technology and in traffic flow (driving of vehicles; non-mechanically propelled road-users; possibility of additional risks arising from new technological traffic safety measures). In part b the following topics are dealt with: active safety measures for vehicles (basic concepts; steering, springing and suspension; braking system; tyres; aerodynamics; visibility and external conditions etc.); passive safety measures in the vehicle (structure; safety restraint systems for occupants; protection of pedestrians and motor- or pedal-cycle riders; biomechanics; post-accident safety; fire protection); measures applied to traffic flow (control on highways; control in (street) networks; information technology and systems); rescue services (possibilities for quicker attention to casualties; ambulances). Under each heading there are a number of more detailed minor topics.
