Technological developments play an important role in the continuous evolution of transport systems. Strategic transport policy has to incorporate the technology factor and should take into account the effects and possibilities of technological options. This paper presents some of the results of an investigation of the field of technological innovations in individual passenger transport. The results presented are a concise survey of ongoing and future technological developments in transport together with an assessment in terms of their effects on the performance, safety amd environmental quality of transport systems. The large number of innovations have been grouped into six themes. For each theme, each theme, the recommended role and activity of the Ministry have been specified.
