Abstract

This report presents the results of an investigation into technological innovations in individual passenger transport. The main purposes of the study are: (1) to identify the major future technological innovations; and (2) to specify if and how the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management should incorporate technology in its general transport policy process. The main results of the study are: (a) a concise description of innovation processes in general; and (b) an extensive survey of ongoing and future technological developments in transport. The study includes an assessment of the effects of these developments on the performance, safety, and environmental quality of transport environmental quality of transport systems. The large number of innovations have been grouped into six categories. For each category the recommended roles and activities of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management have been specified.
