Abstract

Most studies of motor vehicle crashes involving young people focus on drivers. However, much of the problem involves young people travelling as passengers. This report summarises the current state of knowledge concerning teenage passengers and motor vehicle crashes. Topics covered are the contribution of teenage passengers to the overall problem, the heightened risk when teenage passengers are transported by teenage drivers, characteristics of crashes involving teenage drivers and passengers, and the effects of passenger restrictions in graduated licensing systems.
