Abstract

Barriers to communication are an interesting subject of research because of Europe 1992. Barriers are defined as discrete steps in communication costs. Attention is paid to the causes of barriers to communication. Some important barriers are; physical barriers, such as mountains; congestional barriers in networks where the demand is great; fiscal barriers, such as import taxes and costs of visa; international barriers; technical barriers like the different size of railroad tracks in some countries; marketing regulations as the European tariffs in trade and communication; and barriers in telecommunication. Dutch data on international telephone calls are used to estimate the numerical size of barriers.
