The accurate supply of appropriate information towards the right people can be seen as a new means for solving actual traffic and transportation problems. The `Telematics and Information Technology' (T&IT) terms are used for this modern information supply. This paper deals with the functioning of T&IT applications in general, and T&IT applications in transports in special. Some state-of-the-art examples are shown in order to illustrate the framework. It can be concluded that T&IT applications in transports may result in several positive effects, such as: (1) an increased utilization of infrastructure space; (2) a more efficient use of the vehicle fleet; and (3) an increase in the comfort level of transportation services.
