Abstract

The European automobile industry has invested heavily in research and development on modern information systems. Electronics, data processing and telecommunication applications have been developed to achieve maximum use of existing infrastructure. These systems, which are today ready for the market, fall under the general heading of road transport telematics. They are already contributing to solving the vast and complex problems of traffic management and flow, but in order to achieve full implementation of such technologies, close cooperation among industry, infrastructure operators and public authorities will be crucial. This report intends to provide essential information on how this works, what benefits can be expected and why technologies are required.
