Abstract

This paper discusses the possible applications of "Distribution Navigation." A new category of navigation systems is appearing today, so-called "Distributed" or "Off-board" navigation systems. These have been developed to provide new services to the end-user, as well as to decrease the system costs and address the drawbacks of the on-board solutions. This concept makes it possible to get rid of a cartographic CD-ROM and to add additional functionalities such as provision of real- time traffic information or the inclusion of points of interests from third party sources. It also allows the use of cheaper and more flexible hardware in the car, such as PDAs. "Distributed navigation" can also be easily integrated into Telematics services portfolios, enabling Telematics service providers to deliver high value added services to their subscribers.
