Abstract

The potential for telematics systems in the automotive and transport sectors is considered. Telematics allows the transmission of data services and information to mobile users via wireless communication networks. Telematics can be used for navigation and route planning, and emergency and road assistance. Future uses include the remote control of home electronics and mobile entertainment. The telematics services offered by OnStar and ComWORXX are outlined. The OnStar telematic system is an isolated solution restricted to vehicles of the GM parent group. ComWORXX's PortIT telematic system can be used in any car. The system relies on ComROAD AG's open GTTS technology. Users have a choice between implementing navigation (NavCOM), information (InfoCOM) and voice control (VoiceCOM). The structure of the ComROAD GTTS system is described.
