Abstract

Combined transport is characterized by the interlinking of various modes of transport, where the transport unit is not changed and where several transport companies are involved. This form of transport chain necessitates an intensive exchange of data between the companies, the shippers and consignees. The introduction of a telematics system in combined transport is designed to enable electronic data interchange. One basic element of this system is the automatic collection of data at combined transport terminals, together with a terminal management system that builds on these data, supplements them and provides them to the authorized companies via defined interfaces. The problems associated with introducing such a system are due to the differing interests of the companies involved, some of which are in competition with each other. This paper presents technological solutions, ideas on strategies for introducing such systems and addresses the possibilities of funding a telematics system for combined transport.
