Abstract

The projects of Module E examined some aspects of telematics more closely. Based on these results, this part synthesis provides a comprehensive analysis of the "guidelines" for road traffic telematics recently published by the Federal Office for Roads based on the criteria of a sustainable transport policy. This showed that the telematics strategies of the "guidelines" are strongly focused on safety improvements, while other applications - mainly those intended to reduce demand and having ecological effects - still remain on the back burner. Following a comparison of telematics concepts from other countries, and a description of NRP41 results, recommendations for further developments of the Swiss telematics strategy have been brought forward. These include technical measures and priorities (e.g. the design of interfaces to other applications). In addition, the synthesis formulates organisational (co-ordinated strategy for all transport providers) and policy suggestions (e.g. improved evaluation of telematics systems, establishing a user association).
