Abstract

In this paper a list with a number of strategies and measures exhibits the various policy measures that could be taken to reach the goals concerning the development of car use and traffic congestion in the Netherlands. Telework can be seen as one method to reduce traffic demand. The development of different forms of telework can be expected. Research among teleworkers shows that a significant reduction in car use occurs in the morning peak on teleworking days. Individual workers are making more non-work related trips on those days, but these trips are shorter, made more often with slow modes, and are usually made after the morning peak. The development of telework can yield a reduction of 10% to 15% in car mobility during the morning peak in 2015. However, without a coherent set of strategies to reduce car use, this possible relief of traffic congestion will not occur. In a set of measures telework can be an important part. As an alternative for mobility telework can ease the necessary implementation of higher prices for car use. In a coherent set of measures individual reductions will result in a reduction of car use and traffic congestion on the aggregate level.
