Abstract

Volume, speed, and density measurements have been carried out on a single lane of traffic over a highway section approximately one-half mille long. These measurements were obtained from four observation points, which permitted a reconstruction of vehicle movements through this section of roadway. This observational data has been used to test the theory of continuity by measuring the speed of propagation of density changes in the traffic stream.
