Abstract

The PROMISE project has developed an open architecture to enable the testing of a multi-modal traveller information system using portable terminals at sites in Sweden and the UK. The PROMISE architecture supports information flow from various sources, through a series of processors and interfaces to terminals using a range of mobile communications bearers including paging, analogue cellular, GSM and RDS. The system architecture is described briefly. For the current implementation, PROMISE is providing information on bus and tram services; traffic status and hazard warnings; and parking availability. Brief details of the field trials at Gothenburg and Birmingham are presented.
