Abstract
Bitumen is a standardized product; it has to fulfil quality requirements to be tested by standardized test methods. This is not yet the case with asphalts. Asphalt properties are determined by non standardized methods, which makes comparison of test results from different locations difficult. It is high time that standardization of asphalt test methods is begun, especially because european standard test methods are being introduced. Examples of such standards include: a) the determination of bitumen in asphalt qualitatively and quantitatively; b) stability and fatigue tests for the service life of asphalt; and c) adhesion between mortar (bitumen/filler) and mineral aggregate.
