Abstract

The Texas Based Task Force on Older Drivers was convened in April 1992 to make recommendations to meet the special needs of aging drivers so they can maintain mobility and independence through safe driving for as long as possible. Maintaining and improving a safe driving environment for all who use the roadways is the context in which the Task Force considered the special needs of aging drivers. The recommendations address these needs through three categories: engineering, driver performance/retesting, and public education/information. The recommendations include revision of standards for traffic control devices and special attention to the type and maintenance of those devices; development of a comprehensive database on older driver characteristics; improved skills assessment and training to address deficiencies; increased use of the state's existing licensure system to accomodate special needs; implementation of a multi-media campaign with an on-going strategy to increase the public awareness of the issue; and further consideration of devices and methods for identifying and meeting needs of the aging driver. Many of the steps that can be taking in the short-term will benefit drivers of all age groups now and into the next century.
