Abstract

The Mayor of London's Road Safety Plan sets as its priority the reduction of vulnerable road user casualties. The target has been set to reduce Powered Two Wheeler (P2W) user casualties killed or seriously injured in London by 40% by 2010 compared with the average for 1994 to 1998. 7,702 P2W users were injured on the roads in Greater London during 2000. This is equivalent to a rate of 107 per 100,000 population. This is more than double the rate recorded for Great Britain. The highest number of casualties (almost 40%) occur in the age band 25 to 34 years. The highest severity ratio occurs for older users over the age of 65. Most Common Conflict: Another vehicle turns right into the path of the Powered Two Wheeler. This represents 21% of all conflicts involving a P2W. This statistic is backed up by research carried out at the London Accident Analysis Unit. The results were published in October 2001 in a Fact Sheet entitled 'Powered Two Wheeler Casualties in Greater London'. The problem is being tackled in three ways: by Cinema Advert; the use of theatre in Cinema; and an ongoing commitment to the campaign for the 2003-4 financial year.
