This Thematic Research Summary provides a synthesis of research results and policy implications of completed EU projects that have dealt with the theme of Information and Awareness. The first part provides an overview ofthe scope of the theme and summarises policy developments at EU level relevant to the theme. The second part considers research results under fivesub-theme headings. The sub-theme 'Direction signing and Variable Message Signs (VMS)' considers the use of VMS for direction signing, traffic management and incident control. The sub-theme 'Real Time Driver InformationSystems' considers the use of GPS, GIS and the Internet and in particularis concerned with the integration of systems across modes. 'Public Transportand Passenger Information Systems' considers one system designed for blind and partially-sighted people. The sub-theme 'Awareness Campaigns and Transport Training Tools' considers the effectiveness of publicity campaignsand the use of training simulators. The sub-theme 'Fleet and FreightInformation Systems' considers support tools for ships and railways and travelinformation systems for ferries and long distance fleet drivers.
