Abstract

This Thematic Research Summary provides a synthesis of research results and policy implications of completed EU projects that have dealt with the theme of Transport Management for all modes. The results of 31 projects are described under six sub-theme headings. The first sub-theme deals with mode-independent aspects and covers urban traffic, public transport and mobility management. The second theme, also mode-independent, covers freight traffic management, terminals and logistics chains. The remaining four sub-themes relate to transport management projects which focus specifically on each of the four main transport modes - road, rail, waterborne and air transport. Topics covered include mobility management strategies, demand responsive transport, the use of integrated ITS in cities, toll comparisons in Stockholm, innovative e-logistics solutions for freight, intelligent intermodal transport, dynamic information on road surface risk, speed limits tailored to road sections, management measures on the Trans-European Road Network, secondary road network management, a European railway open maintenance system, reliability centred rail maintenance, rail punctuality incentives, a safety management system and remote maintenance platform forshipping, a river information service, a virtual reality system for air traffic control, an inter-operable air traffic management system and a decision support system for airport development.
