Abstract

This Thematic Research Summary provides a synthesis of research results and policy implications of completed EU projects that have dealt with the theme of Urban Transport. The first part provides an overview of the scopeof the theme and summarises policy developments at EU level. The second part considers research results under 8 sub-theme headings. The sub-themes comprise: i) access restrictions and integrated pricing strategies, ii) public transport, iii) new forms of vehicle use and/or ownership, iv) mobility management and soft measures for managing mobility demand, v) goods transport, vi) low environmental impact vehicles and infrastructure, vii) policy facilitation and vii) transport systems of the future. Some of the topics covered include alternative charging systems, the internalising of external transport costs, the integration of heavy and light rail, modulartechnology for demand responsive transport, measures to increase public transport patronage, the integration of car-sharing into urban planning, multimodal/intermodal transport software, the potential of electric two-wheelers, best practice in the introduction of environmentally-friendly vehicles, quality of life assessment, cybercars, driver assistance systems and automated vehicle guidance.
