Abstract

The influence of the environment, geometric constraints and conflicts of use on driver behaviour are examined. The driving task is explained as a 3- stage system: (1) mental representation of the visual scene seen by the driver; (2) search by the latter for indices to help towards establishing a hierarchy of information; (3) anticipation, decision reaction. The role of street furniture, and treatment of the road and the environment in influencing driver behaviour are discussed.
