Abstract

Road traffic is a complex system of interacting units, the aggregate performance of which depends on the behaviour of individual drivers. This paper attempts to summarise recent work relevant to driver behaviour as a determinant of vehicular traffic characteristics and as contributory factor in accidents. Speed is a key behavioural variable, and studies of speed /flow /geometry relations and speed modifying measures are reviewed.
