The road network in Egypt has developed steadily during the past few years. Associated with the road building programme there has been a programme of road improvement, and one of the roads recently upgraded has been the Cairo- Alexandria desert road. In addition to widening the road, providing road shoulders and a central reservation, a comprehensive roadside rescue and first aid service was introduced. This paper gives a brief description of the accidents on the desert road in 1983, and describes the roadside rescue centres and their function.
