Abstract

Motorcycle riders are Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) in the same way that pedestrians and cyclists are, in so far as they have no external protection from impacts. In the same way that the well-being and mortality of certain environmentally sensitive species of insects and amphibians are indicators of the overall health of the environment, VRUs may be considered indicators of the health of the road environment. Thus if there is an increase in injuries and fatalities of VRUs, this may be seen as an indication that the road environment is fundamentally unhealthy.
