Abstract

The monitoring systems of the Hanshin Expressway network mainly consist of vehicle detectors, TV cameras and automatic vehicle identifiers (AVI). By the end of 1996, 53 AVI cameras had been implemented in the network and the AVI systems are capable of identifying plate numbers of each vehicle, and those data are used for verifying section travel times predicted with roadside traffic counts data. The AVI data are also available for estimating time varying origin and destination (OD) matrix in the network. This paper aims to modify the estimation model previously proposed by the authors, to verify the model using the AVI data and traffic counts observed on an inbound radial line of the network and to analyze time fluctuating characteristics of the estimated OD matrices. Furthermore, an appropriate framework for installation of the proposed model is discussed.
