Abstract

The French toll motorway operators belonging to the ASFA have committed themselves to the development of an electronic motorway fee collection system called TIS. The systems produced for the project have just successfully completed the qualification stage. This document retraces the main lines adopted, and explains the key choices that were made: two-way system, with in-vehicle unit and smart card, able to evolve towards multi-lane operation. The main characteristics of the system are discussed: management of a financial transaction, and not just a simple access authorisation; capability for decentralised management through features implemented in-vehicle; flexibility and modularity; high performance level; openness towards various commercial operating systems. The validation processes and the development prospects are also briefly examined.
