Anfang 1997 als Projekt zur Zusammenarbeit der Verkehrspolizeien europaeischer Hauptstaedte unter dem Namen TISPOL (Traffic Information System Police) ins Leben gerufen, wurde die Organisation zu einer Vertretung der europaeischen Verkehrspolizeien weiter entwickelt. Die Zahl der Mitgliedsstaaten wuchs - annaehernd analog zur Erweiterung der Europaeischen Union - auf inzwischen 27 (einschliesslich Norwegen und Schweiz als assoziierte Mitglieder). TISPOL versteht sich als Interessenvertretung fuer professionelle polizeiliche Verkehrssicherheitsarbeit in Europa. Kernanliegen ist die Unterstuetzung der Europaeischen Kommission in ihrer Absicht, die Zahl der Verkehrstoten und -verletzten in Europa zu reduzieren. Zur Zielerreichung werden europaweite Kontrollen koordiniert, "best practice"-Beispiele ausgetauscht und Fortbildungsveranstaltungen organisiert. Das neue TISPOL-Projekt LIFESAVER verspricht, die europaweite polizeiliche Verkehrssicherheitsarbeit positiv zu verstaerken. (A) ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: In the beginning of 1997, TISPOL (Traffic Information System Police) was created as a project of the traffic police of the European capitals. Subsequently, TISPOL was enhanced to represent all European traffic police forces. The number of member states grew - nearly along the lines of the expansion of the European Union - to 27 by now (including the Associated Countries Norway and Switzerland). TISPOL sees itself as representing the interests of professional road safety police work in Europe. Its main priority is to support the European Commission in its aim to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries in road accidents in Europe. To achieve this goal, European-wide traffic checks are coordinated, best practices are exchanged and courses and seminars are organised.
