Abstract

The UK Traffic Message Channel (TMC) Consortium is a Private/Public Sector Partnership set up to undertake a commercial demonstration of TMC in the UK. This is to prove the market for a TMC service, to provide answers to questions on market size and take up needed to begin commercial transmissions. Transmissions have been underway since September 1998, and the initial transmission area will give coverage of three-quarters of the traffic incidents in the UK. Four different types of receivers are, or will become, available for the UK market by mid 1999. An evaluation contract has also been let to ensure that the best possible information is gathered about customers' requirements. The Consortium intends to roll out to a full national service following this demonstration. (A*)
