This report is the result of a trainee ship at the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research. It describes the current and future development on several collision warning (CW) and collision avoidance (CA) systems. CW/CA systems have the intention to avoid collisions between two vehicles or between one vehicle and an object/pedestrian. CW systems only warn the driver in case a collision might occur, CA systems autonomously try to avoid a collision. Almost every CW/CA system that have been discussed in this report will be implemented with 10 to 30 years from now. Only rear end collision warning and road departure/lane departure warning systems will possibly by implemented within 10 years. The time to implementation depends upon the level of complexity of each of the systems. For example, systems that only warn the driver will probably be implemented sooner as fully autonomous systems. Every CW/CA system that have been discussed in this report is expected to reduce the total number of collisions. (Author/publisher)
