For the setting of criteria for the installation of traffic signals on junctions, cycle crossings or pedestrian crossings, use is made of waiting times. One starts with simplified mathematical models, by which the traffic flow can be described and by means of which the waiting times can be calculated. For the estimation of waiting times simple mathematical models are needed. A starting point which is more easily applicable in practice, regarding succeeding times in traffic on a more busy main traffic flow, instead of the usual negative exponential model, is discussed.
