Abstract

This paper presents a case study where a collection of streaming multimedia videos are constructed for use as classroom exercises (or homework) for demonstrating the variability and impact of subjective human estimation of the Highway Capacity Manual's Arrival Type factor on the estimated Level of Service of a signalized intersection. The fields of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and traffic engineering have a variety of real-time processes and systems, such as construction activities, traffic signal operation, and weaving of freeway traffic, for which development of traditional text or lab based educational material is difficult. Simply posting text-based notes or laboratory exercises on a web page provides little improvement in actual educational content. Streaming multimedia is reported to be an emerging innovative educational tool that can assist in improving learning. However, the challenge is to develop an appropriate framework for developing this content.
