Abstract

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety lists the 34 vehicles that win its top safety pick in this article. All vehicles listed this year are equipped with electronic stability control (ESC) which the Institute believes can prevent up to 10,000 fatal crashes a year. Vehicles without ESC were not considered. Besides ESC, winners were graded on frontal, side, and rear crashworthiness. The Institute noted that for the first time pickups were eligible, and Toyotas Tundra is the first to quality. Eight vehicles from Ford and its subsidiary, Volvo, made the list of winners, as did seven from Honda and its subsidiary, Acura.
