Abstract

TOPTRAC (TRENT OPtimizing TRAffic Control) is a traffic dependent control method for small networks of junctions in an urban area. It is based on the TRENT (TRANSYT REaltime Network Timings) control method. In June 1999, the first TOPTRAC pilot has been realised on the Burgemeester Matsersingel in the Dutch city of Arnhem. However, TOPTRAC was evaluated negatively. This was the reason to carry out a study into possible improvements of TOPTRAC. In this study the following aspects are taken into account: (1) measuring intensities; (2) switching process; (3) sensitivity analysis of parameters within TOPTRAC; and (4) phase sequence.
